LOST DAUGHTER OF THE LAND

Written by Lynette Vantreese
From the album "Lynette Vantreese"

1ST VERSE
The Midwestern prairie is as flat as a saucer
The sky domes above her like a creamy bowl
She drives past the cornfields, the sunflowers, and the fence posts
Miles of highway tick on by like the songs on the radio

CHORUS
Welcome home, lost daughter of the land
Holding fortune like a suitcase in your hand
Although you've come so far
You haven't forgotten who you are
Welcome home, lost daughter of the land

2ND VERSE
She pulls up the gravel road, the dogs chase her car
On the porch, her parents hug her in their restrained Lutheran way
She steps through the screen door, it's like stepping back in time
There's the same outdated furniture and the yellow of aging lace

CHORUS

BRIDGE
Funny how the past keeps reappearing
But what used to drive her crazy
Now just makes her laugh

She can afford to find these things endearing
She'll get back in that car and leave
Knowing she can always come back
She never stays long, but she always comes back
